DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under immediate supervision the Crime Lab Scientist performs analytical procedures related to of biological samples for the GBI Crime Lab. Performs DNA analysis of physiological fluids for the purpose of identification and individualization. The type of material typically examined includes but is not limited to semen and saliva collected at crime scenes or from articles of physical evidence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct DNA extraction, amplification and analysis to identify suspects or victims through biological samples.
- Identifying and analyzing bodily fluids.
- Examining blood group typing, antibody screening and other serological test to link suspects or victims to crime scenes.
- Sit or stand for long periods.
- Able to work assigned schedule.
- Provide expert testimony in court.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES :
- Collect, identify, classify and analyze physical evidence
- Work assigned hours.
- Provide expert testimony in court in the discipline of Forensic Biology.
- Strong verbal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Perform repetitive movement
- Fundamental knowledge of operating laboratory equipment.
- Use highly technical equipment.
- Follow established GBI Crime Lab policies & procedures.
- Established experience in using Microsoft Office Suite software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent will occasionally be required to stand; walk; reach, carry with hands and arms; stoop and kneel. Frequent light lifting 10lbs. unassisted and/or moving of evidence kits or supplies is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
These positions require the incumbent to work in a laboratory setting which includes shared office space with other Crime Lab personnel . These positions must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in the laboratory to include lab coat, gloves, face mask and protective eye wear. PPE will be provided.
NOTE: This position will require some travel and operating a state vehicle.
A valid Georgia drivers license is required.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a Major in BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY or FORENSIC SCIENCE related area, that includes the successful completion of at least 40 semester hours (or 60 quarter hours) of biology or chemistry related major course work.
AND,
Nine (9) cumulative credit hours (or equivalent quarter hours) in course work that provides an understanding of the foundation of DNA analysis. These courses can include, but are not limited to, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, biological chemistry, population genetics, molecular genetics, cell and molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics. General education science courses, e.g., Biology 101, cannot be used to satisfy the education course requirements.
AND,
at least one (1) credit hour of a Statistics (or Population Genetics) course.
- Successful completion is considered a "C" or better in coursework.
- The course title for Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry and Statistics (or Population Genetics) must be clearly stated as such on the transcript(s). A general science education course, such as Biology 101, would not count as one of these courses. A syllabus or detailed course description may be requested.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference will be given to applicants that, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
- Current DOFS Employee.
- Previous experience performing human STR analysis in an accredited forensic laboratory.
- Previous experience operating a Model 3500 genetic analyzer.
- Previous experience using GeneMapper ID software.
- Previous experience using extraction techniques for human DNA.
