The Division of Forensic Sciences within the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill Crime Lab Scientist vacancies in the Department. Applicants selected for employment will be offered a position at the following crime laboratory as the final work location:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under immediate or limited supervision analyzes and compares latent prints to known prints of individuals in an effort to make identifications or exclusions on physical evidence submitted by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies for investigative and legal purposes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in a Natural, Physical, or Forensic Science from an accredited college or university with the Successful Completion of at least 40 semester (or 60 quarter) hours of coursework in Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc...).

* Successful completion is considered a "C" or better in coursework. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference will be given to applicants that, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess any of the following:
  • Experience in a forensic laboratory performing latent print examinations.
  • International Association for Identification (IAI) Certification in Latent Prints or equivalent.
  • Prior experience with optical, physical or chemical processes used in the recovery and preservation of friction ridge impressions.
  • Prior experience in digital imaging.
  • Experience in a forensic or analytical laboratory.
  • Forensic Science degree accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC).
  • Completion of an 18-week forensic training program in latent print examination.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The incumbent will occasionally be required to stand; walk; reach, carry with hands and arms; stoop and kneel. Frequent light lifting and/or moving 10lbs. of evidence kits or supplies unassisted is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

These positions require the incumbent to work in a laboratory setting which includes shared office space with other Crime Lab personnel . These positions must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in the laboratory to include lab coat, gloves, face mask and protective eye wear. PPE will be provided.

NOTE: This position will require some travel and operating a state vehicle for court. A valid Georgia drivers license is required.

Supplemental Information: EXAMINATION SUBJECTS:
The test will be relative to the discipline or position you select. If you apply for multiple disciplines, additional tests may be required. There are no study materials available for the test.
