Purpose

The purpose of this position is to conduct and coordinate fundamental and applied research on acoustic systems. The person in this position will be expected to assist and lead in development and implementation of analytical and experimental technologies that address existing challenges to enable accurate design and evaluation of acoustic systems specific to Navy and DoD applications.

Responsibilities

  • Analytical and numerical modeling of the dynamic response of multiscale acoustic and elastic media.

  • Assist co-PIs in research coordination and execution of current and future research projects. This will include holding regular meetings with peers, engineering and technical staff, graduate and undergraduate research assistants. Generate conference presentations, archival journal papers, and annual technical reports, and maintaining experimental and computational facilities at the laboratory.

  • Development of finite element technologies that enable accurate and computationally-efficient simulations.

  • Generate sources of funding for fundamental and applied research programs.

  • Measurement of air- and water-borne wave phenomena and development of experimental techniques for the characterization of novel dynamic material properties.

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in engineering, physics, mathematics or other related applied sciences.

  • Five years of experience in theoretical and numerical evaluation of finite element methods applied to acoustic wave phenomena, structural vibrations, and multiscale dynamic materials.

  • Record of research quality should be demonstrated through publications in peer reviewed archival literature and participation in professional society meetings.

  • Five years of experience in design and execution of experimental systems for evaluating acoustic and elastic wave phenomena.

  • A successful applicant must have fluency with commercial and/or open source finite element software, in addition to technical computing software such as Matlab or Python.

  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

US Citizen. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Research experience in characterization of materials and sensors for acoustic applications.

  • Experience with finite element modeling utilizing Multiphysics coupling.

  • Hands on experience designing and using acoustic apparatus including development of validation studies for novel systems.

  • Strong theoretical background in acoustic and elastic wave propagation, vibrations, multiscale mechanics and underwater acoustics is desired.

  • A successful applicant will demonstrate strong potential to act as an independent researcher and help lead a small research team of 4-8 people.
