Position Summary:

The Solution Development Engineer will be responsible for leading CAD design excellence, automation engineering, mobile automation deployments, and solution development for complex material handling systems. This role combines top-tier technical ability, creative problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration, while also serving as the internal authority on autonomous mobile robot (AMR) and AGV integration.

Key Responsibilities:

CAD Design & Engineering:

  • Lead designer for system layouts, automation designs, and custom solutions using AutoCAD.
  • Create and maintain AFLs proprietary CAD block libraries and plug-and-play drawing templates
  • Train and mentor junior CAD designers fostering skill development and standardization.
  • Create and maintain 3D-renderings virtual warehouse to support sales and marketing initiatives across all company divisions.

Solution Design & Engineering

  • Lead the technical development of AMR-based solutions, from concept to implementation.
  • Conduct site surveys and facility assessments to collect critical data for system modeling.
  • Develop detailed system layouts and workflows using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.).
  • Calculate throughput, ROI, and resource requirements for proposed solutions.

Automation & Robotics Deployment:

  • Responsible for the deployment, maintenance, and technical support of OTTO AMRs and Linde AGV PACS systems, including demo units.
  • Lead demo deployments, including preparation, testing, and transport via company van.
  • Serves as primary point of contact (POC) for all technical, mechanical, and software-related support for autonomous equipment.
  • Oversee Fleet Manager software on AFLs virtual machine, including version control and system updates in coordination with IT.

Customer Engagement & Collaboration:

  • Participate in discovery meetings with clients to define operational pain points and performance targets.
  • Present proposed solutions with clarity, both visually and technically, to stakeholders.
  • Work closely with sales, project management, and customer teams to ensure alignment.

Project Support:

  • Assist in the selection and configuration of AMR platforms (e.g., OTTO Motors, ANT, PACS).
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on integration with WMS, WES, and ERP systems.
  • Support commissioning, testing, and validation of AMR deployments on-site or remotely.
  • Troubleshoot and refine solutions post-implementation for continuous improvement.

R&D and Industry Leadership:

  • Liaise with automation OEMs for beta testing for pre-release software.
  • Consult with automation OEMs for feedback, improvements, and troubleshooting input.

Documentation & Standards:

  • Produce, manage, and maintain engineering documentation including system specifications, process flows, and interface descriptions.
  • Maintain standards for safety, compliance, and best practices related to mobile robotics.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge base and continuous innovation efforts.
Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelors degree in Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Design, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years experience with AutoCAD; proven portfolio demonstrating advanced technical drawing and system design.
  • Strong experience with autonomous robotics, AGVs, or similar automation platforms.
  • Self-motivated with high attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, able to collaborate cross-functionally and coach others.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with software integration, PLCs, or scripting languages.
  • Exposure to virtual or augmented reality applications for sales/marketing.
  • Strong customer service orientation, with ability to deliver technical solutions clearly and professionally.
  • Exposure to fleet management software such as OTTO Motors, ANT, and PACS.
  • Experience working in warehouse automation, lean manufacturing, or material handling environments.
  • Comfort working in a dynamic, cross-functional team environment.
  • Familiarity with fleet management software, VM environments, networked control systems, Lidar systems, 3D camera systems, SICK sensors, Visions Guided systems.
  • Hands-on maintenance and deployment experience with AMR technology.
