Research Scientist Intern, Flexible and Stretchable Electronics (PhD)

Reality Labs (RL) is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative Research Scientist Interns with a passion for technology to develop next-generation soft wearable systems at our research location in Redmond, WA. These roles are focused on the research and invention of novel polymer manufacturing techniques for fiber spinning. In particular, we welcome PhD students in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, textile engineering or similar fields. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Qualifications: Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in the field of Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or relevant technical field 3+ years hands-on experience working in a lab environment, specifically working in soft elastomers, liquid metals, flexible electronics, printed electronics, stretchable electronics, soft robotics, wearable devices or other related fields Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment Experience in patterning liquid metal, or fabricating liquid-metal based electronics 2+ years experience with soft material characterization techniques (NMR, FT-IR, rheology, tensile test, dielectric spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, W) or developing custom material testing hardware Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops, conferences, or journals such as Science Journals, Advanced Journals, Nature Journals, ACS family of Journals, Joule or other Cell Press Journals, Applied Physics Letters, RCS Family of Journals, or similar Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment Intent to return to a degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op

Responsibilities: Develop new flexible and stretchable electronics that enable the next generation of wearable devices. Conduct the necessary background literature review to help guide the hypothesis and experiments. Design and conduct experiments in a lab environment and potentially a clean room. Communicate and document experimental plans and results effectively to a small and larger groups of engineers/scientists. Collaborate with the larger Reality Labs Research team and provide creative leadership on active material technologies.
