The Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and reference laboratory services, applied research, training, and subject matter expertise for a wide range of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic infectious diseases.

New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range, as applicable.

Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Masters Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Masters and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

This position supports the California Department of Public Healths (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by performing quality, timely provision of highly complex public health laboratory testing for the diagnosis and epidemiologic investigation of a range of bacterial diseases of great public health importance in the State of California.

The position works as a highly independent bench-level research scientist under general guidance from the Section Chief of the Immunodiagnostics & Molecular Characterization Section. The Research Scientist (RS) II will participate in microbial identification and characterization testing using various phenotypic and molecular testing methods. The RS II also has a key role in developing new test methods and preparing, writing procedures and reports, and presenting lab findings to support public health testing that directly aligns with CDPHs mission. Furthermore, the RS II actively participates in various laboratory activities to maintain compliance with federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) regulations and Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) Branch policies. Certification as a California Public Health Microbiologist is preferred. May be delegated CLIA general or technical supervision over testing processes, if qualified.

  • Vaccinations are recommended.
  • Public Health Microbiologist Certification.
  • Extensive bacteriology experience performing molecular and conventional testing methods.
