About the role
- The RD&A Scientist-Biochemist collaborates with Business Development, Operations, Regulatory, Finance, Sales and other RD&A experts to develop multi-functional, clean label food ingredients to maintain freshness of food products. The role will be the subject matter expert in biochemistry analysis to guide research decisions for biomolecular design and process development.
- You will conceive, plan, design, and conduct advanced studies for the analysis of biomolecules as independent contributor and will interact/coordinate with other groups and functions on project development and improvement. This role will fuel Food Protection and Preservation R&D application team and product advancement to commercialize roadmap for the innovation strategy and develop frameworks for accelerated implementation of products. The role will also keep with the current state of the art by complementing their experimental work with literature searches and participation in relevant conferences or online forums, universities, center of excellence, industry experts. The successful candidate will use knowledge of biochemistry to communicate analyses for mode of actions for the ingredients that would be used. The successful candidate must have strong analytical and quantitative skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and a track record of successful independent and collaborative research.
Key responsibilities
Design and conduct analytical experiments to characterize biomolecules.
- Conduct multiple classic and customized analytical techniques.
- Apply expertise with quantitative and qualitative measurements using HPLC, electrophoretic (gel and capillary),
immunochemical and spectroscopic analytical methods.
- Execute methods and/or assays for the determination of enzyme activities.
- Evaluate and summarize data using analytical methodologies, interpret results, draw conclusions, and recommend
options for future experiments to achieve project goals.
- Apply advanced scientific knowledge to projects. Conceive/design/plan/coordinate advanced independent and collaborative studies required for product development.
- Analyze complex data critically by applying advanced computer skills.
- Appropriately documents experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines and presents scientific observations at team meetings and internal technology reviews.
- Develop conclusions based on information from multiple sources.
- Work collaboratively with the team to solve problems and advance the project.
- Prioritize studies and activities to align with project goals and be responsible for timely project completion.
- Maintain a high level of professional expertise by staying current with scientific and industry literature, technologies, and products
Qualifications and skills
M.S./PhD in Food Biochemistry, Food Chemistry or Biophysical Chemistry with focus on validation and development of analytical methods for analyzing food ingredient functionality, nutraceuticals, biomolecules, and
understanding mode of action. A Master's degree and a minimum of 5 years of technical experience is preferred or a
PhD. Preference would be given to candidates working with antioxidants or antimicrobial compound analysis.
Competencies
- Expertise in analysis of biomolecular structures/functionalities.
- Demonstrated independent use of analytical instrumentation, including separation science (e.g., HPLC, CE,
gel electrophoresis) and spectroscopy (e.g. UV-vis, IR, NMR, MS, light-scattering).
- Past demonstration of ability to optimize analytical methods to new applications and troubleshoot
instrumentation or method problems.
- Knowledge of mode of action of compounds and implementing that knowledge to understand chemical/metabolic pathways of bacteria, yeast, and mold.
- Willing to take on new and challenging assignments and to implement new ideas or alternative solutions.
- Take thoughtful and timely action when confronted with a problem.
- Capable of adjusting to dynamic working environment and changing priorities, and of ensuring timely completion of assigned tasks.

The typical hiring range for this role is $91,311 to $134,638 annually and is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, location, etc. In addition to your pay, Kerry offers benefits such as a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and retirement contribution (all benefits and incentives are subject to eligibility requirements).
