Research Associate, Modeling - Research Engineering and Operations

University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI)

The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) seeks a Research Associate, Modeling to support advanced materials science, laser applications, and computational modeling and simulation. This full-time position is critical to advancing UTSI's research mission by collecting, interpreting, and documenting analytical and evaluative data while contributing to laboratory design, development, and maintenance.

The Research Associate, Modeling works independently and collaboratively as part of a larger research team on funded and institutional projects aligned with the strategic vision of the institute. The successful candidate will also mentor graduate students, ensuring the next generation of researchers benefits from hands-on guidance and expertise.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations (40%)

Design, develop, and maintain laboratory apparatus for research projects.

Collect and analyze data using advanced observation, experimentation, and electronic equipment.

Compile analytical reports and write papers to document findings.

Manage multiple projects under the direction of principal investigators.

Research Development (35%)

Review research protocols and assess feasibility for various projects.

Conduct research independently while supporting collaborative objectives.

Contribute to all phases of research, from proposal development to publication.

Participate in regular conferences and evaluations with principal investigators.

Leadership & Safety (25%)

Ensure lab safety and compliance with state, federal, and university regulations.

Provide guidance to staff and graduate students on laboratory operations.

Perform other duties as assigned to support UTSI's research mission.

Qualifications

Required:

Master's degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, or aerospace engineering.

Five (5) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Ability to manage multiple projects, maintain strict timelines, and work under limited supervision.

Knowledge of lab equipment, materials, and processes related to facility operations.

Preferred:

Experience working in a research laboratory environment.

Ability to obtain a security clearance.
