Research Associate, Laser
University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI)
The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) seeks a Research Associate, Laser to advance cutting-edge research in laser applications, materials science, and computational modeling and simulation. This full-time position plays a critical role in supporting UTSI's strategic research initiatives, working both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic research team.

Responsibilities
Laboratory Research & Operations (40%)
Design, develop, and maintain laboratory apparatus to support advanced research.
Collect, evaluate, and interpret analytical data using electronic equipment and specialized devices.
Conduct independent research aligned with institutional and funded project objectives.
Compile findings into reports, publications, and presentations.
Manage multiple projects under the direction of various principal investigators.
Project Leadership & Research Development (35%)
Review research protocols to assess project feasibility.
Lead all phases of research, from proposal development to publication.
Collaborate closely with principal investigators to define research objectives.
Support and guide graduate students in laboratory settings.
Laboratory Safety & Compliance (25%)
Ensure adherence to state, federal, and university safety regulations.
Provide leadership and oversight for laboratory operations and staff.
Perform other duties as assigned to support UTSI's research mission.
Qualifications
Required:
Master's degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, or aerospace engineering.
Five (5) years of relevant research experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Strong project management skills and ability to multitask across multiple projects.
Knowledge of lab equipment, materials, and facility operations.
Preferred:
Ability to obtain a security clearance.
Experience working in a research laboratory environment.
