Scientists in Brookhaven's Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division (CMPMSD) study basic and applied aspects of quantum materials and their utilization. The CMPMSD at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks applicants for a research associate position participating in the development, understanding, and characterization of novel quantum materials for the next generation of microelectronics and quantum information science and technology.

Position Description:

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a 1-year term , to grow high quality single crystals of quantum materials and study them with transport and advanced electron microscopic methods. These experiments will be integrated in a dynamic team environment, including collaboration with theorists, machine learning experts, and other experimentalists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Single crystal growth of quantum materials
  • Performing transport and electron microscopy experiments and analyzing and interpreting the results
  • Reporting the scientific results in academic papers and talks

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science or related discipline is required within the last 5 years.
  • Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a multi-institutional team.
  • A proven ability to grow high quality single crystals, and ability to repair and maintain synthesis related equipment
  • A proven ability to perform structural characterization with advanced transmission electron microscopy
  • A proven ability to perform transport property characterizations at high pressure, low temperature and high magnetic field
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff is required.
  • Candidates should have a proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with topological quantum materials
  • High pressure processing including spark plasma synthesis
  • Experience with dilution refrigerators
  • Synchrotron based materials characterizations

  • This is an on-site position
  • One year term position with possible second year renewable

BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $71,900 - $80,000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
