The Oncology Thematic Research Center at BMS is a key research and early development engine, responsible for the discovery and development of novel oncology therapeutics for patients. Centered at our state-of-the-art research sites in Cambridge and Seattle, scientists focus on novel targets and pathways for tumors that are refractory to current therapies. With a deep understanding of the causal human biology, we are able to leverage our multiple modality platforms to best match the modality to the mechanism and desired outcome. We are a fully integrated drug discovery through translational and early clinical development organization which exploits state-of-the-art in vitro, in vivo and ex-vivo models of Cancer biology and Immuno-oncology to identify and validate targets. We partner closely with colleagues in Translational Medicine, Informatics and Predictive Sciences and Early Clinical Development to generate biomarker and patient enrichment hypotheses to enable efficient decision making in early clinical trials. We are optimally positioned to complement the world-class translational expertise, biology and leading academic research centers in the area.
Position Summary:
This exciting role offers the opportunity to shape the next generation of Cancer Immunology and T cell engager therapies to transform patient outcomes. We are seeking an innovative scientist with leadership potential to advance drug discovery programs in Cancer Immunology from target nomination to IND filing. They will join the Discovery Biology Team within the Oncology Thematic Research Center at Bristol Myers Squibb in Seattle, WA. The qualified candidate should be a highly motivated, independent, interactive, and creative scientist capable of working within and leading cross-functional teams to advance drug discovery programs.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead matrixed teams to advance both our T cell engager strategy and therapeutic project teams, from early target validation through IND filing. They will also contribute hands-on at the bench through in vitro biology work. This work includes developing and validating assays such as flow cytometry, mid-scale screening, T cell bioassay, molecular biology, and other approaches that will enable drug candidate discovery and advance our understanding of T cell engager mechanisms of action. Additionally, this individual will contribute to similar efforts related to the nomination and development of novel Cancer Immunology therapeutics that target immune suppressive and other cell populations in the tumor microenvironment. In addition to leading candidate discovery and characterization efforts, the successful candidate will work with bioinformaticians and translational research scientists to design and execute work supporting patient and indication selection as well as the development of a biomarker plan.
Position Responsibilities:
This role offers the opportunity to drive scientific innovation and shape the strategic direction of novel immunotherapy development at BMS in a highly collaborative environment that is guided by strong science.
In the role as a Principal Scientist within Discovery Biology, the ideal candidate will:
Lead highly matrixed discovery strategy and project teams (from target concept to IND) that may influence portfolio decisions and have cross-functional impact across BMS
Coordinate and participate in activities of a biology team to support in vitro experimentation
Leverage internal screening and reverse translational datasets along with the scientific literature to propose and develop novel approaches for Cancer Immunology and T cell engager therapies
Collaborate with functional area leads (e.g. in vivo pharmacology, translational biology, DMPK, informatics, and predictive science) to define priorities, assess risks, and drive project progression
Apply deep technical knowledge to validate and execute on in vitro assays that elucidate drug mechanisms of action and optimize therapeutic profiles
Interpret complex biological data to inform decision-making and guide lead optimization
Communicate scientific findings and strategic recommendations effectively across the broader BMS enterprise
Utilize excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams
