The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 to join their team.
OVERVIEW
This position plays a pivotal role in advancing the labs research objectives. This position is responsible for leading and executing complex scientific projects focused on pluripotent stem cell biology, human embryogenesis, reproductive health, and maternal-fetal health. The Research Scientist 3 will contribute to the development and implementation of innovative experimental approaches, analyze and interpret data, and disseminate research findings through presentations and publications.
The Research Scientist 3 role in the Mia Yang Lab at the University of Washington involves managing and executing highly complex scientific projects, often requiring the development of novel experimental methodologies. This position demands proficiency in advanced stem cell techniques, data analysis, and interpretation within the context of pluripotent stem cell biology, human embryogenesis, reproductive health, and maternal-fetal health. The role requires a strong ability to independently design and optimize experiments, troubleshoot technical challenges, and adapt protocols to evolving research questions. The position also involves collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, effective communication of scientific results, and mentoring of junior lab members. Balancing multiple projects with varying timelines while maintaining rigorous scientific standards is a key complexity of this role.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Designing, conducting, and evaluating complex experiments independently. Interpreting data and providing insightful analysis to drive project decisions. Reporting research progress and outcomes directly to Dr. Yang on a regular basis. 60%
- Leading innovative research initiatives and fostering collaborative projects within the lab and with external partners. 20%
- Presenting and publishing high-impact research findings in top-tier journals and conferences. 5%
- Contributing to the strategic direction of the lab and mentoring junior researchers, including students, postdocs, and technicians. 5%
- Ensuring compliance with lab safety protocols and maintaining high standards in cell culture and bench work. 5%
- Assisting the PI in securing funding by contributing to grant writing and other funding applications. 5%
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors degree in Neuroanatomy, Reproductive biology, neurology, embryology or a related field and four years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
- The Research Scientist 3 must have experience in relevant fields such as stem cell biology, developmental biology, reproductive biology, molecular biology, or a related discipline, with at least 4 years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrated expertise in pluripotent stem cell culture, gene editing, molecular techniques (e.g., CRISPR, RNA-seq), and high-throughput data analysis is essential.
- Experience leading independent research projects, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at scientific conferences is required.
- The candidate should also have strong mentorship skills and experience supervising research staff and trainees.
- Proficiency in experimental design, data interpretation, and manuscript preparation is necessary, along with excellent communication and organizational skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- In addition to the required qualifications, it is desirable for the Research Scientist 3 to have a Ph.D. in a relevant field.
- Prior experience working in a multidisciplinary research environment, particularly within academic or biomedical research institutions.
- Experience managing collaborative projects and contributing to multi-institutional research initiatives is highly valued.
