Scientist III, Organic Chemistry Manufacturing

The successful candidate will have broad experience in organic synthesis, including reaction optimization, troubleshooting, and experimental design to establish standard processes. The candidate must be capable of performing bench science activities, developing self-directed work plans, and synthesis procedures. This senior position requires the ability to influence without direct authority by applying training, experience, and leadership skills to achieve safety, quality, delivery, and business goals. Apply your organic chemistry synthesis skills, scientific knowledge, and analytical expertise in a collaborative laboratory to supply fluorescent probes and reagents for research and commercial products, enabling our customers in the life sciences industry.

A Day in the Life:

  • Perform multi-step organic synthesis (100 mg to 500 g scale) in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Understand production documents and be capable of completing processes and procedures.
  • Review historical manufacturing records, analyze scientific data, and resolve processes required for current manufacturing work orders.
  • Implement work based on the planned manufacturing schedule. Develop and follow individual schedules for work orders and projects, support the team production schedule, and coordinate team resources.
  • Apply analytical methods to analyze data, interpret results, recognize issues, and resolve complex problems.
  • Recognize and escalate manufacturing problems and process failures. Collaborate to identify variables, perform experiments, and implement corrections.
  • Maintain accurate records of all manufacturing work using Master Batch Records and other documentation. Review and approve co-worker documentation within your area of expertise.
  • Identify areas for process improvement or redevelopment with senior team members. Handle implementation of approved changes within quality system requirements.
  • Evaluate, revise, and create process documents and work instructions to ensure safe, efficient, and reproducible manufacturing processes.
  • Follow department policies and guidelines related to process equipment, chemical handling, and waste disposal. Contribute to the development and implementation of safe lab practices.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of raw materials, WIP, and finished products through error-free transactions in enterprise business systems.
  • Mentor team members in lab practices, technical skills, troubleshooting, process improvements, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Participate in the transfer of new products from R&D to manufacturing, performing initial builds with R&D partners, and providing feedback on new manufacturing processes.
  • Suggest improvements to safety, quality, manufacturing, and business system processes to maintain a safe work environment, high quality standards, and manufacturing efficiency.

Keys to Success:

Education and Experience

  • Masters Degree in Organic Chemistry or related field with 3+ years of applicable experience required (equivalent combinations of education and experience in organic synthesis laboratory techniques in a manufacturing and/or academic research laboratory may be considered).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong synthetic skills in synthesis, isolation, and characterization (NMR, HPLC, MS, and absorbance) of organic compounds.
  • Technical writing skills with an ability to document synthetic procedures accurately and succinctly.
  • Shown organizational and time management skills, including the ability to evaluate, prioritize and complete multiple projects while responding to changing priorities and due dates.
  • Effective people skills in a fast-paced, team-centered work environment to constructively communicate about shared resources, technical issues, operational processes, due dates, and priorities.
