Job Description

Scientist II, Organic Chemistry Continuous Improvement

Discover Impactful Work:

The Organic Chemistry manufacturing department delivers fluorescent probes and reagents that enable scientific discovery with cellular labeling and detection tools. This hybrid role merges chemistry, continuous improvement, technical writing, and supply chain. Work with the chemistry team and support functions to standardize chemistry and business processes, handle SKU and document lifecycle, and implement quality and productivity improvement projects.

The successful candidate will have experience in organic synthesis, be capable of performing bench chemistry, and be interested in growing their scope of work within operations. Apply your organic chemistry synthesis skills, scientific knowledge, and communication to support our chemistry team in supplying over four thousand research and commercial products.

Day in the Life:

  • This role will focus on learning our chemistry and operational processes by working primarily as a scientist in the lab doing organic synthesis. Over 6-9 months, the focus will shift to operations support role activities 70-80% of the time. The mix of work will be based on customer demand, special projects, and business needs.
  • Compose detailed, clear protocols and work instructions for chemistry manufacturing processes and the use of process or analytical equipment. Handle document creation and revision in an electronic document control system.
  • Review and interpret historical production records and manufacturing documents to collect data and information about existing processes. Work with the chemistry team to resolve methods, procedures, and standard processes to include in documents.
  • Use internal business systems (ERP and PLM) to create and revise raw material and sub-assembly SKUs to reflect current manufacturing processes and fulfill supply chain requirements accurately.
  • Participate in PPI activities (RCCM, Gemba, 5S) and work with the team to develop strategies to document and report each event and ensure implementation of all corrective actions.
  • Perform multi-step organic synthesis (100 mg to 500g scale) in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Understand the written production documents and processes and procedures.
  • Attention to personal and co-worker safety and follow all department policies and guidelines related to the operation of process equipment, chemical handling, and waste disposal.
  • Work independently and apply judgment based on guidance and instructions from the supervisor and senior team members within the standard established processes and methods used in the department.
  • Recognize and raise manufacturing problems and collaborate with senior staff to identify and implement corrections to manufacturing and/or testing processes. Align with GDP to accurately record manufacturing work and complete all required transactions in enterprise business systems.
  • Cross-train in other manufacturing departments (particles, quantum dots, and conjugation chemistry) to support manufacturing and continuous improvement activities.
  • Complete all assigned tasks daily, which may require overtime based on fluctuations in customer demand.

Keys to Success:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in chemistry or related field with 2+ years of applicable organic synthesis experience required (equivalent combinations of education and experience in organic synthesis, chromatography methods, analytical methods, and troubleshooting chemistry processes and resolving product quality (HPLC, NMR, UV-Vis, TLC))

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Technical writing skills to document synthetic procedures accurately and succinctly, using proper scientific style, word usage, spelling, and grammar. Interpret and summarize scientific/technical results.
  • Experience using Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality business systems, and knowledge of data and processes required to operate these systems.
  • Excel experience using conditional formatting, nested logic statements, data tools, sort/filter, pivot tables, and lookup functions.
  • Strong organization and time management skills, including the ability to evaluate, prioritize and implement multiple projects while responding to changing priorities and due dates.

This position does not offer relocation benefits.
