GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

The essential functions described below are specific to the Medical Technologist Lead. It is expected that the Technologist also meets all essential functions related to the primary job description.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1. Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or equivalent. Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) required.

2. Bachelors degree required, emphasis in medical technology or related science preferred.

3. Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Medical Technologist or equivalent required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

2. Performs complex testing and resolves testing discrepancies independently.

3. Accepts special projects delegated by the supervisor. Completes projects in the timeline expected.

4. Serves as a customer service liaison. Demonstrates knowledge needed to resolve problems. Fields phone calls from nursing units and physicians needing supervisory attention. Works professionally to resolve any questions or concerns brought to your attention. Directs any unresolved issues to a pathologist.

5. Functions as a trainer and supporter to CLAs and new Certified Laboratory Scientists. Serves as a coach and a consultant to less experienced employees.

6. Correlates and interprets lab data based on knowledge of physiological conditions affecting testing results.

7. Performs complex and specialized lab analysis requiring advanced skills, technical expertise, and a broad use of independent judgment.

8. Performs complex instrument troubleshooting. Consults with instrument technical support if necessary.

9. Delegates tasks to the appropriate personnel and follows through to see that they are accomplished.

10. Functions in the role of a mentor and lead tech. Serves as the laboratory resource person for questions and problems.

11. Interprets and consults with allied health care professionals on clinical data.

12. In crucial situations or downtimes, communicates laboratory status to the clinical coordinator. Is knowledgeable and prepared to take on duties during a disaster or disaster drill. Takes charge and delegates tasks as necessary. Is aware of the laboratory as a whole and direct staff in completing workload.

13. Develops trust and teamwork with others, both inside and outside the laboratory.

14. Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork among staff. Is encouraging and easy to approach.

15. When scheduling conflicts and/or personnel call in sick, works to find coverage and/or shift changes to provide adequate staffing. Informs shifts/techs of schedule changes/staffing shortages.

16. Acts as a positive role model in the lab. Actively supports lab decisions and encourages others.

17. Establish department schedule for review by supervisor.

18. Attend RHM meetings as assigned by the department supervisor.

19. Assist with direct observation for colleague competencies as assigned by department supervisor.

20. Performs coagulation calibrations and lot to lot change validations.

21. Implements new products, equipment, or procedures. Utilizes current research and literature to evaluate and make recommendation to management for updating policies and procedures.

22. Reviews and maintains appropriate regulatory guidelines under the direction of the department supervisor.

23. Assumes responsibility of laboratory supervisors in their absence.
