Northrop Grumman Advanced Weapon Systems has an opening for a Material Process Engineer (Level 3 or 4) to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in Northridge, CA.
This is an on-site role and there is no remote work. The selected candidate will work in a team environment with other engineering organizations performing detailed technical reviews of drawings, specifications and manufacturing plans. You will be responsible for analyzing, researching, and developing materials and their related application processes for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems, and will also apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material science to investigate material issues and provide solutions.
Responsibilities:
Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems.
Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes.
Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and designs, processing processes and quality engineering specifications.
Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications.
May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
Basic Qualifications for a Principal Material Process Engineer - Level 3:
Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other relevant STEM degree with 5+ years of associated experience
Extensive experience working with metals and metallurgical principles, including corrosion, fracture mechanics, heat treatment, machining, forging, casting, chemical finishes, plating, cleaning, and material characterization activities
Experience working with aerospace and mil-spec sealants, adhesives, primers, and paints
Experience in writing and maintaining material and process specifications
Experience with Non-Destructive Inspection/Testing (NDI/NDT) techniques
Current US Government Secret security clearance adjudicated within the last 5 years with ability to be cleared for a Special Access Program (SAP) clearance prior to the commencement of employment.
Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal Material Process Engineer - Level 4:
Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other relevant STEM degree with 8+ years of relevant experience
Extensive experience working with metals and metallurgical principles, including corrosion, fracture mechanics, heat treatment, machining, forging, casting, chemical finishes, plating, cleaning, and material characterization activities
Experience working with aerospace mil-spec sealants, adhesives, primers, and paints
Experience writing and maintaining material and process specifications within the Defense industry
Experience with Non-Destructive Inspection/Testing (NDI/NDT) techniques
Current US Government Secret security clearance adjudicated within the last 5 years with ability to be cleared for a Special Access Program (SAP) clearance prior to the commencement of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Relevant experience of working on military aerospace programs
Experience with preparing and presenting oral and written research, technical reports, dissertations, design changes, and test/qualification plans
Experience working in collaboration with Global Supply Chain (GSC), International Trade Compliance (ITC), Operations, Manufacturing, Design Engineering, Logistics, and Systems Engineering groups, including understanding their requirements and executing their processes, to ensure success for ones own tasks
Author change notices, technical reports, statements of work, technical memorandums, material specifications, process specifications, qualification plans, and procedures that meet programmatic requirements with minor supervision
Interpret technical requirements of controlled documents (AS/AMS/ASTM/MIL/etc) and provide reasonable deductions based on the flow down of requirements
Adjudicate supplier qualification data and respond to supplier inquiries regarding technical requirements with minor supervision
Understanding of NAS411 inside a Hazardous Materials Management Program (HMMP)
Intimate understanding of how contractual requirements become engineering requirements
Diplomatic ability to participate in customer or internal high-level technical meetings and resolve questions or conflicts in a judicious and expedient manner.
