Position Overview:

MP Materials is seeking a hands-on process engineer to be an integral part of the team designing and building a new metal, alloy, and magnet-making facility. The process engineer will play a key role in the execution of MP Materials’ mission to restore the full rare earth supply chain to the United States of America. This role will support the first step in our manufacturing process: molten salt electrolysis. This position will work closely with area management, quality, EHS and maintenance personnel to meet area objectives. In addition to molten salt electrolysis, the ideal candidate will also have knowledge of strip casting, and/or magnetic/metallic powder milling.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Participate in equipment specification, design reviews, and commissioning of electrolysis lines.
  • Provide the electrolysis operators and technicians with technical training and support.
  • Contribute to EHS risk assessments, HAZOP studies, and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate raw materials and their impact on plant performance and product quality.
  • Track KPIs, driving to achieve high yield, consistent product quality, and minimal EHS impacts.
  • Supervise the daily use of quality control procedures.
  • Drive initiatives to ensure stable and efficient metal making plant.
  • Investigate and resolve quality issues within molten salt electrolysis and associated subprocesses.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities to eliminate waste and reduce the overall cost.
  • Participate in projects to advance rare earth electrolysis process technology.
  • Communicate progress verbally and through written detailed technical reports and presentations.
  • Document and disclose intellectual property and assist in patent filing preparation and defense.
  • Work with procurement, vendors, maintenance, operators, and other team members.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Metallurgy/Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in electrochemistry with industrial scale processes and equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience in gathering and tracking process control information for SPC.
  • Problem solving experience (FMEA, 8D, A3, Root Cause Analysis etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experienced user of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record are required to drive company vehicles on property.

Desired Qualities:

  • Deep technical knowledge of electrochemistry in general, and rare earth molten salt electrolysis.
  • Knowledge of downstream processes, particularly alloying and casting.
  • Experience with SAP.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems and convince others (management down to operators) that your solution is the right one.
  • Experience with programming, and process control operations; COMSOL Multiphysics, CFD, MATLAB, Python, Mini -Tab, AutoCAD /Solidworks.
