We are seeking a Development Chemist to become an integral part of our R&D Color Formulation team. The candidate will support formulation efforts to incorporate raw material technologies into product prototypes to meet consumer needs, developing products which have demonstrated consumer perceivable benefits. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in physical materials/technologies and an interest in applying this scientific knowledge to drive business results. The associate will partner closely with internal colleagues and external technology suppliers to deliver innovative new product launches supporting the organizational business goals. The associate will complete all formulation work and organizational systems entry and release activities for their products. Key Job Responsibilities: Responsible for developing and delivering innovative Color Lip products across many product forms (lipsticks, glosses, balms, stains,), working with agility and speed in a fast-paced environment Support the product development process from initiation through formulation, testing, documentation and eventual commercialization coordinating all activities with partner functions to ensure successful project execution Create and execute technical development plans through experimentation with unique raw materials, formulation approaches and processing techniques Apply physical science principles to evaluate and select raw materials based on functional performance, regulatory compliance, and utility in lip product systems Conduct, record and interpret product stability testing to ensure product quality and identify solutions when issues arise Coordinate all required product safety, performance and quality testing with matrix partners (e.g. microbiology testing, safety testing, efficacy testing, package testing, etc.) Manage collection, database entry and approval of all formula and ingredient information for partner review Support the collection, submission and review of required testing including Safety, Clinical, Microbiology, Packaging, Stability, Line Trial and First Production processes while ensuring alignment with project timelines and cost targets Support scale-up and manufacturing processes, including troubleshooting and process optimization, partnering with other functions to develop final product specifications and procedures Develop and maintain strategic relationships with external technology suppliers Evaluate competitive product launches to keep abreast of developments within the beauty industry and share output with colleagues for learning Assist leadership in resolving manufacturing, production, consumer or other related performance issues for both new and existing products Assist senior lab personnel as necessary and provide technical mentorship to junior chemists and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team Ensure a safe, open and collaborative work environment for the Color lab Experience: Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline and a minimum of 3-5 years of product formulation or related bench experience, or a Ph.D. in one of these areas with 0-5 years of industry experience Experienced in developing a deep technical understanding of materials and translating experimental design into actionable results Proficient in the use of computer systems and databases KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Technical knowledge of raw materials used in the cosmetic industry and their chemistry (polymers, waxes, emulsifiers, thickeners/rheology modifiers, pigments/dyes, delivery systems, ) Ability to apply physical/material science principles to enhance product performance, texture, stability and sensory attributes Ability to work independently and as part of a matrix team with excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once while meeting tight time constraints Ability to multitask and work collaboratively within a fast-paced, dynamic environment Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills Strong oral and written communication skills Ability to influence peers as well as key decision makers in R&D and be equally comfortable understanding both the in-depth technical details and bigger picture related to program goals and responsibilities. Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail and quality of information generated Willingness to take ownership and accountability to drive projects forward in a timely and efficient manner Ability to navigate and manage workflow within a variety of organizational systems to code formulations, document product information, and formally release products into downstream programs Knowledge to operate standard lab equipment (mixers, viscometers, pH meters,) #LI-CH1 #LI-Hybrid The base pay range for this position is $75,000 - $95,000 / year; however base pay offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge, and geographic location. Certain positions may also be eligible for short-term incentives as part of total compensation. Employees (and their families) are eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits. Employees are covered by the company-paid basic life insurance policy and company-paid short-term disability insurance (the benefit commences upon hire and allows for a portion of base salary for up to 26 weeks if you are disabled). Employees will also receive 3 weeks of vacation, pro-rated based on date of hire for the 1st year of employment and twelve paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Vacation will depend on role.
