Assistant Structural and Molecular Biologist

The Structural Biology Center at the X-ray Science Division (XSD) at Argonne National Laboratory supports several structural biology projects related to human health and bioenvironmental science. Currently the group has an open position for an assistant structural and molecular biologist that would engage in the following activities:

  • Conceives and conducts experiments, both independently and collaboratively, on the structure determination of biological macromolecules, using crystallographic diffraction methods and cryo-electron microscopy with special emphasis on applications of synchrotron radiation.

  • Participates in crystallographic analyses on macromolecular crystals as part of research activities.

  • Implements new approaches in structure determination, and refinement to aid the structural biology programs.

  • Participates in the operation of the eBERlight user facility, training and assisting users in various beamlines for demanding structural biology projects.

  • Participates in integration of new equipment necessary for operation of the APS Sector 84.

  • Purifies, crystallizes proteins and protein complexes.

  • Use biophysical techniques to characterize physical chemistry of macromolecules.

  • Publishes scientific papers, gives presentations at scientific meetings, conferences, and seminars.

  • Maintains cognizance of world-wide developments in pertinent areas of research.

  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of and experience with synchrotron beamlines and cryo-EM facilities is required.

  • Knowledge and skills in macromolecular crystallographic methods and concepts, particularly data collection using synchrotron sources and data processing using advanced software, the operation of x-ray sources, x-ray data analysis, structure refinement, interpretation and computer modeling of molecular structures.

  • Knowledge and skills in molecular biology, in protein biochemistry, protein purification, crystallization, biophysics, and the physical chemistry of macromolecules.

  • Knowledge and skills in macromolecular crystallographic and cryo-EM methods and concepts, particularly data collection using synchrotron sources and cryo-EM facilities.

  • Skills in data processing using advanced software, data analysis, structure determination, structure refinement, interpretation and computer modeling of macromolecular structures.

  • Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

  • This level of knowledge and skills is typically achieved through the attainment of a Ph.D. in molecular biology/biophysics or equivalent.

  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors and 5+ years' experience, Masters and 3+ years' experience, PhD and 0+ years' experience, or equivalent.

The expected hiring range for this position is $90,063.00 - $143,010.27.
