Job Description Summary

The student laboratory technician provides hands-on assistance in analytical chemistry, food and agricultural science, or clinical research, supporting daily lab operations and assisting researchers on multidisciplinary projects.

Essential Duties/Tasks

  • Assist researchers and laboratory scientists with daily lab tasks and experimental workflows.
  • Prepare and process samples for analysis using a variety of techniques and instruments, including: ICP-MS, LC-MS, GC-MS, LC-QTOF, chemistry analyzers, hematology analyzers, etc.
  • Perform basic lab work such as weighing, pipetting, labeling, organizing samples, and logging data.
  • Maintain general lab cleanliness and upkeep of: lab benches, autoclave room, microscopy lab, and common instrument areas.
  • Operate and perform routine cleaning and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with autoclaving lab waste and sterilizing materials.
  • Receive and log incoming packages and samples; prepare outgoing shipments.
  • Help with inventory management, restocking supplies, and keeping records up to date.
  • Lift and move lab equipment or supplies (up to ~25 lbs) when needed.
  • Follow lab safety guidelines and help ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Contribute to maintaining an organized and functional research environment.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student at Texas A&M University.
  • Major in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Nutrition, Biomedical Sciences, Agriculture, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous lab experience is a plus but not required - training will be provided.

  • None

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Previous lab experience is a plus but not required - training will be provided.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work with minimal instruction, and manage time effectively.
  • Must be detail-oriented, dependable, and willing to perform both technical and routine lab tasks.
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods during lab work.
  • Availability to work part-time (e.g., 10-20 hours/week) during the semester; more hours possible during breaks or summer.
