Position Summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics Department, is seeking a dedicated Manager-Research Scientist to join their team.

A Manager-Research Scientist functions as a functional manager, overseeing large to multiple research teams and ensuring the successful execution of the department's research strategy. This role involves strategic decision-making, budget management, and high-level coordination with other departments. Managers provide visionary leadership, shaping the direction of research efforts and driving organizational growth through impactful scientific advancements. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research participant contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Contributes to the vision and strategy of the chemistry team, including new directions, people and projects.
  2. Effectively operates the chemistry team activities such that there is a positive impact on the overall group and department.
  3. Prepares and reviews proposals and interacts with existing collaborators to monitor progress on existing grants or contracts.
  4. Manages research programs that involves collaborations with other groups both within and outside of the University.
  5. Develops new scientific relationships with other collaborators, academic groups/scientists.
  6. Actively participates in all internal and external collaborations.
  7. Creates a work culture that values teamwork and holds people accountable.
  8. Oversees the implementation of projects to ensure projects meet timelines, quality and cost objectives.
  9. May use independent judgement to make decisions and must exercise confidentiality with sensitive material.
  10. Manages departmental staff to include hiring, training, advancing, appraising, motivating, disciplining, and assuring healthy and safe working conditions of staff members.
  11. Implements HR processes and other administrative responsibilities associated with the direct supervision of professional and technical resources of the functional group.
  12. Mentors staff, postdocs, and graduate students.
  13. Implements and observes appropriate safety and health practices including personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe laboratory practices.
  14. Involved in budget development and monitoring; ensures the appropriateness of time and material charges to projects.
  15. Special duties\:
  16. Stays current in the field of specialization and is aware of any changes, both internal and external, that may affect the group's operation.
  17. May be asked to serve on internal ad hoc committees as well as external review committees.
  18. Assists in the generation of cost estimates for proposals and any required terms and conditions of contractual relationships.
  19. Contributes to the external visibility of the group by publishing manuscripts, filing patent applications, attending and presenting at scientific meetings.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range \: $ 126,470 - $ 205,515 Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience OR Master's degree in a related field and seven (7) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • PhD in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry.
  • Fifteen+ years of directly related functional experience with a minimum of five years managing a professional staff.
  • A track record of funding with peer-reviewed publications and patent portfolio.
  • Possesses expert knowledge and is an externally recognized within the field of specialization.
  • Demonstrated experience initiating new initiatives/projects.
  • Experience in managing scientific collaborations and contracted research.
  • A strong diverse knowledge of modern chemistry.
  • Knowledgeable and current in chemistry practices and advancements as evidenced by activities such as active professional development and speaking engagements.
