Job Summary:

The Quality Control Technician is primarily responsible for monitoring and maintaining quality control and assurance standards for aggregate materials produced at our facilities and job sites throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Asphalt quality control responsibilities may be performed on an as-needed basis, as assigned by management.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all sampling, testing, and result verification in strict adherence with ASTM, AASHTO, State DOT, and other required test methods and Company procedures.
  • Monitor aggregate production operations to ensure material consistency and compliance with internal and external quality standards.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate records and logs of aggregate quality testing and results.
  • Inform QC Management and/or other appropriate personnel immediately when product quality issues arise.
  • Recommend adjustments to aggregate gradations based on laboratory and field results.
  • Notify production and delivery personnel of actions or changes required to maintain quality standards.
  • Analyze test data and reports to identify trends or issues and, when required, document findings in formal reports.
  • Assist in resolving material quality issues raised by customers, inspectors, or project managers.
  • Collaborate with plant operators, sales, dispatch, and field staff to ensure materials meet performance expectations and project specifications.
  • Must obtain applicable industry certifications (e.g., ODOT Level 1 Aggregate, Level 2 Asphalt, or equivalent) within the first year of employment

Other Required Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend and participate in Company safety meetings and training classes as required.
  • Train other employees as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
  • Assist with asphalt quality control and testing on an as-needed basis, including recommending adjustments to asphalt mix designs when directed.
  • Prolonged periods of walking, sitting, lifting, pushing and pulling.
  • Able to safely climb and descend ladders.
  • Must be able to access and navigate the facility.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds or up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in operational areas.
  • The position will require work outside of normal business hours.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent mathematical abilities (weights and measurements) are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Prior quality control experience in a construction or manufacturing environment highly desirable.
  • Valid Driver's License (DL) and satisfactory driving record are required.
  • Must be willing to work long hours and weekends when necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and on the phone.
  • Represent The Gerken Companies to customers in a professional manner, supporting the company's goals.
  • Team player, with the ability to build positive relationships.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Education and Experience:

  • Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school is required.
  • At least one year of experience in asphalt or aggregate production or testing is preferred.
