The Position

Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.

Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action; OR incumbents serve as the technical scientific expert for a bureau within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The Bureau of Sustainable Materials Management (BSMM) currently has a vacant Environmental Scientist 4 (ES4) position in the Development Branch. The supervisor for this branch will be responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and supervising staff and maintaining a strong program. The branch supervisor will be responsible for planning and implementing policies/programs to reduce impacts of materials and products throughout their life cycle, from design and production through distribution, consumption and use and management at end-of-life. They will establish goals and measures; support and perform research; develop and implement incentives, product stewardship, waste reduction, and waste management programs and collaborate with diverse public and private partners. The ES4 will also be required to develop, monitor, and review complex contracts and grants; recommend approval or modification for contracts and grants based on governing laws and regulations.
