Job Description:
The Epidemiologist will provide data interpretation and logistical support for the successful operations of the New York State Wastewater Surveillance Network. The purpose of this project is to use wastewater surveillance as a tool to estimate community risk and to provide trends of various pathogens. The Epidemiologist will primarily analyze and interpret statistical data, prepare epidemiological reports, and act as a liaison for local health departments and wastewater treatment plants. The Epidemiologist will secondarily be engaged with creative projects, including scientific writing, workshops and trainings, and improving data interpretation. This position will work to promote and protect the health and safety of NYS communities.
Education and Experience:
- Masters degree in public health or related field required; or equivalent combination of education and employment experience.
- Strong quantitative background.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Proficient knowledge of epidemiological principles and statistical analysis methods.
- Basic understanding of systems and procedures necessary for surveillance investigation of infectious diseases.
- Proficient understanding of database software and statistical analysis software.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Good attention to detail and organization.
Responsibilities:
- Performs data activities, statistical analyses, and analytics dealing with the collection and analysis of wastewater surveillance, epidemiology, and survey data.
- Drafts and presents quality data sets and statistical reports, including both reports for participating local health departments and wastewater treatment plants, and training workshops for participating local health departments.
- Supports wastewater treatment plant and local health department participation including coordinating logistical activities to ensure successful operations of the wastewater surveillance system.
- Serves as the primary contact for wastewater treatment plants and local health department communication, gathering information and problem solving.
- Supports scientific investigations in the utility of wastewater surveillance for public health benefit.
