(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Hawaii Observatory, Subaru Telescope Project, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

**MONTHLY SALARY:** $5,283/Mon.

DUTIES:

Participates in the operation, technical development, and scientific exploitation of Subaru Telescope's exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy instrumentation, including the Infrared Doppler Velocity Instrument (IRD), and the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) system. Pursues research in high contrast imaging for exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy. Writes reports and submits papers for publication. Drives to the Summit to fix and update instruments as needed.

**PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:**

**EDUCATION** PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related field.

**EXPERIENCE** Two to four (2-4) years of research experience in astronomical instrumentation development, or in scientific use of adaptive optics astronomical instrumentation on a major astronomical observatory facility.

**KNOWLEDGE** Knowledge of optical systems for high contrast imaging. Knowledge of wavefront sensing and control techniques for astronomical observations.

**ABILITIES and SKILLS** Good verbal and written communication skills. Programming skills for astronomical data analysis. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawaii's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.

**PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS** Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
